1. Validation

This programme syllabus was validated by the Faculty Board at Södertörn University on 2013-11-13 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance. This programme was revised on 2019-02-13.

2. Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Economics as the main field of study and English B or equivalent

3. Programme outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student is able to:



- explain advanced theories and methods within a spectrum of applications.



Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student is able to:



- independently develop and delineate a research problem and conduct independent studies that contribute towards the development of knowledge



- convey knowledge to an academic audience as well as to society at large



- participate in academic discourse within the discipline



- apply the economic perspective to other professional fields



- perform qualified tasks in the role of professional economist



- conduct advanced econometric/statistical analysis.



Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student is able to:



- critically assess empirical and theoretical claims



- understand how theoretical perspectives and methods impact on academic studies.




4. Applicability

The Master’s programme provides the student with the qualifications required for positions in the financial sector, central government, academia and other public sectors as well as in private firms outside the financial sector, such as consultancies. The Master’s programme in Economics prepares the student for PhD studies as well as providing a sound basis for a professional career outside the academic world.

    Qualification stipulation

  • To attain a Master's degree, the student must have completed courses corresponding to 60 credits from courses at an increasingly advanced level in the main field of study. The student must have written a dissertation (degree project) corresponding to at least 30 credits.

  • 6. Programme design

    Semester 1, focusing on advanced applications of Economics and Social Science methods, consists of one compulsory and three optional courses. The courses are research based and their aim is to enable the student to independently write a dissertation and acquire the required skills within a field of application in Economics where the wider social context is of particular relevance.

    Semester 2 consists of a compulsory course that comprises the writing of a Master's dissertation (degree project).

    The programme deepens as well as widens the student’s base of knowledge. The aim of the independent dissertation is to provide greater depth, while the aim of the other courses is to deepen as well as widen the student's perspectives.

     A student is guaranteed a place on a range of courses equivalent to a full workload. There is no guarantee that a student is offered a place on his/her first choice of course. For entry requirements, see course syllabus.

    10. Credit transfer for prior studies

    A student has the right to have prior learning assessed for accreditation within the study programme.
