1. Validation

This course syllabus was validated by the Faculty Board for Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University on 2018-04-23 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance. This course was revised on 2019-01-30.

2. Entry requirements

The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies, or the equivalent

3. Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • synthesise various theoretical ideas and models for processes in environmental planning that are relevant to the sustainable governance of social-ecological systems.
  • define and apply the concepts of environmental assessments, adaptive governance, ecosystem services and resilience in relation to the governance of social-ecological systems.
  • critically analyse theories of physical environmental planning in current research and in national and international policy frameworks for the implementation of sustainable governance of social-ecological systems.
  • critically evaluate their attitudes and work in relation to different theories and ideas related to environmental planning and sustainability science.

  • 4. Course content, modules and examinations

    The course is problem-oriented and contains both social science and natural science perspectives on planning processes for physical planning in different types of landscapes (for example, marine, urban or rural), viewed as integrated social-ecological systems. The course provides a scientific basis, goals and tools for environmental planning and includes key aspects, such as environmental assessment, ecosystem services, adaptive and participatory perspectives on planning processes and governance, including user and property rights related to ecosystems and natural resources.

    6. Examination format

    The examination consists of:

  • Active participation, including written and oral presentations

    Absence from seminars may, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for through written assignments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student takes the course again.
  •  The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

    If a student has a certificate for compensatory support from Södertörn University, the examiner may decide on an adapted examination or alternative examination form in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

    7. Reading list

    If there are changes in the reading list between semesters, a new list for the next semester is to be validated no later than July 15 and December 15 respectively.

    8. Restrictions on accreditation

    The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
