1. Validation

3. Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of Business English, including vocabulary, correspondence and reports
  • understand and produce both written and spoken English in an appropriate and comprehensible way
  • adapt his or her own language style depending on audience, context and communicative goals
  • account for how intercultural relations affect English as a business language
  • discuss the importance of language in a business context

    • 4. Course content, modules and examinations

    The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge of Business English and deeper understanding of the role of language in the business world. The student will learn to use both written and spoken language in various business contexts and for various purposes. The student will practice writing reports, letters or other forms of correspondence, and will also get experience making presentations for various audiences, all the while developing a business-specific vocabulary.

    5. Course design

    Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars, including oral presentations. All teaching and course materials are in English.

    6. Examination format

    Active participation in seminars and continuous assessment of written assignments and oral presentations.
     If a student has a certificate for compensatory support from Södertörn University, the examiner may decide on an adapted examination or alternative examination form in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

    7. Reading list

    If there are changes in the reading list between semesters, a new list for the next semester is to be validated no later than July 15 and December 15 respectively.

    8. Restrictions on accreditation

    The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.

    Following the Vice-Chancellors decision on internationalization and grade scale at Södertörn University College (dnr: 1148-1.1.2-2018), this syllabus replaces the syllabus with course code 1065EN, with the difference that the grade system has been updated. The syllabus is determined through special order (dnr: 1774-2.1.1-2018).
